Scott Malcom: Music
Fanfare for the Common Man
Aaron Copland, this is not! This was a song written in hopes that Wisconsin would be a leader in the nation regarding Human Rights legislature. The vote came and went, and no one is better off because of it. So the hierarchy of American citizenship continues. It's a good thing that the integrity of marriage is protected by the righteous! Give me a break.
Why are you so scared?
It all really isn't that different.
I'll paint a portrait you can understand.
Can you focus now
before you place your judgment?
Can you look me in the eyes?
Don't turn around.
REFRAIN
Now can we go down?
Down by the river's edge
and let the ripple in the water wash away what's been.
Are you strong enough, enough to old my hand,
and play a fanfare for the common man?
We'll take a step with each question
and we'll smile at each other's answers.
Ain't it funny how the questions and the answers all seem the same?
Tell me all your hopes and fears
how you want someone from this day forward
to have and to hold
ain't it funny how I want that too?
REFRAIN
The clock is ticking and I'm not getting any younger
a little bit of understanding goes a long long way!
