Bridges That Burn

(Scott Malcom)

from Irrational Disposition album

Sometimes you have to burn bridges to protect yourself. Here's a song about a bridge I torched back in 2003!

You take the high road and I'll take the low.

It's not a choice that we made, it's the world we both know.

And I guess at the end of the day some bridges must burn.

I see the reflection of the fire on your face.

I ignite all connections and they burn in the bay.

I put a hand on my shoulder as we nod to the past.

REFRAIN
So I strike a match and watch the bridges burn,

and I inhale the smoke of the lessons I've learned,

and we bask in the glory of the fire.

We bask in the glory of the fire of the bridges we burn.

It may seem tragic, but our time has expired

in the sweet smell of fuel and a match in the mire.

I keep what I can and I burn what I can in the fire.

We stand and we smile through the heat and the smoke.

We both look onward and we both start to choke.

There's cleaner air somewhere; it's a chance that I'm willing to take,

if for only my sake.

REFRAIN

Look at the flames; they shine on the water,

the water that keeps me safe from you.

Look at the flames; they shine on the water,

the water of sacrifice

the water of don't play nice

the water that saved my life

REFRAIN

You take the high road and I'll take the low.

It's not a choice that we made, it's the world we both know.

And I guess at the end of the day some bridges must burn.
