Place Your Bets
This is one of the saddest songs Scott has ever written about betrayal and love lost. The metaphor of a dying relationship and a horse race is one of Scott's favorites.
I kiss you gently on your way out On your way to shut the door It took me a moment just to figure out I've seen that look before Back in 1994. You've got your leather coat and you're smelling great You're headed to a birthday party somewhere I don't know who's one year older and I really don't care. Because I know that he'll be there Nobody said this race was fair. Place you bets, boy Looks like the horses are ready to run Make your choice now and you best choose well. Place your bets, boy Now you're off to the race. I know there's only one first place. 2 weeks before Christmas Eve I see you sitting at the bar It seems that I should have something to say but I don't know who you are I don't know who you are I see you moving in that old familiar way and in that moment times stands still It seems that I should have something to say but I know I never will... I know I never will. Could you have been more human? Would that have been so hard? But you turned away. You had a betting game to play. (Refrain) I didn't know I was running in a race or I would have tried just a little harder to win. I didn't know I had a number across my chest and you had placed your bets on him.
