Written in July of 2004, Genealogy is a loving tribute to family and the homeland. Originally from rural Georgia, Scott loves to pay homage where it is due...his family and the natural beauty of the South both qualify.

I watch the tractor plow another mile.

Daddy turns the corner and he waves at me.

He lets me drive it for a little while,

and I can tell that he wants me to see his love of the land.

Genealogy

I want you to know it’s in my blood.

Coursing down the family tree though I’m far from home.

I’m so far from home.

In the garden with my grandma,

Too young to know what I’m doing and she laughs at me.

She knows my patience won’t get me far,

but I can tell that she wants me to see her love of the land.

DNA

the funny way the land's heredity.

A twisted chain sunshine and rain

The land is family.

I'm far away but that's ok.

It's all a part of me.

Some things this city can't take, my love of the land, my genealogy.

My mama tells me to mow the lawn.

I like the feeling of the sun on me.

She’s always working so hard,

and I can tell that she wants me to see her love of the land.
